The collection consists of three weekly time books (1942-1945) and two ledgers (1943-1946 and 1946-1951) from Groton Plantation. Time books record the hours that employees worked and their pay rates. The collection consists of the logbook of the Union screw steamer Western World from 1862. Daily entries by Samuel B. Gregory regard the weather, crew activities, food, and ship operations. Gregory writes about blockading activities off Charleston, S.C., and Savannah, Frederica, St. Simons, and Doboy Sound, Georgia; numerous encounters with Confederate ships and blockade-runners in the North Santee River (S.C.); and raids on several plantations. Three handwritten letters and a bill of sale are laid in the log.
